Reason given for Angelo Mathews’ dismissal prior to facing a ball

Following the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s wicket, Matthews came in to bat at No. 6. He was timed out, forcing him to walk back before facing a ball—a first in all of international cricket.

The seasoned all-rounder is from Sri Lanka. Whoever entered the World Cup as a substitute player after the deadline was confused. Bangladesh filed an appeal because he waited a while to resolve a helmet-related issue.

Shakib Al Hasan had just dismissed Samarawickrama, caught by Mahmudullah close to the rope, in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when the event occurred.

Matthews took his time getting in. As he took his position, the strap on his helmet broke, causing him to scramble.

Shakib and the Bangladesh side protested for a “timed out” dismissal as he motioned to the changing room for a new helmet. Much to Mathews’ dismay, the umpires upheld the request. Despite being seen having a long talk with Bangladesh and the umpires, Matthews was made to return inconsolably since the appeal was not withdrawn.
