Australia is defeated by India on the first day of the Mumbai women’s Test.

India bowled Australia out for a meek 219 to take the opening day’s stumps with 98 for one. Showing complete control of the one-off test at Wankhede Stadium.

Jess Jonassen, a left-arm orthodox spinner, trapped Smriti Mandhana’s (43 not out) leg before the wicket with her fourth ball. Just before the Mumbai end, she looked formidable, as did her opening partner, Shafali Verma (40). The Indian pair, who shot at nearly a run-a-ball in their boundary-laden 90-run partnership to cut the gap to 121 runs, dismissed Australia’s seamers with contempt as they consistently missed their lengths.

India was cruising along at 64 runs without losing when Ash Gardner’s finger-spin came into play in the 10th over. This eventually put an end to the home team’s barnstorming momentum. Australia’s seamers, including Kim Garth, who was errant, and Ellyse Perry, who was struggling, gave up 77 runs in their 12 overs. Lauren Cheatle was making her debut. By contrast, the seven overs bowled by spinners Gardner and Jonassen cost just twelve runs.

Earlier, captain Alyssa Healy’s steely 38 and new vice captain Tahlia McGrath’s easy fifty off 56 balls. Garth’s useful, unbeaten 28 spearheaded an otherwise lackluster Australian performance at the bat in difficult circumstances.

Off-spin pair Sneh Rana (three for 56) and Deepti Sharma (two for 45) provided valuable assistance to seamer Pooja Vastrakar (a career-best four for 53) as she tore away the tourists’ top and middle.

Australia faced immediate danger as they plummeted to seven wickets in the first ten deliveries. Vastrakar bowled Perry over the gate for four, and the youthful opener. Phoebe Litchfield was run out in the opening over without having to face a ball. After removing Beth Mooney (40) with the final ball before lunch, Vastrakar, who caused Australia problems with her each-way seam movement, went on to eliminate Annabel Sutherland (16) and Ash Gardner (11), respectively, in the afternoon session.

Healy bravely faced her first knock in two months after suffering an injury to her right index finger from a puppy bite. Healy was announced as Meg Lanning’s long-term captain earlier this month.
