Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins of Australia broke records in the IPL auction.

In the history of the Indian Premier League auction, Australia captain Pat Cummins made history by being the highest-paid player. However, an hour later, his teammate Mitchell Starc broke the record.

The experienced paceman acquired the Kolkata Knight Riders for A$4.43 million (£2.35 million). Surpassing Sunrisers Hyderabad’s earlier purchase of Cummins for A$3.67 million during the Tuesday night auction in Dubai.

Both bids exceeded the $3.15 million that was spent for Australian talent Cameron Green. A young all-arounder in the previous season.

Travis Head, a World Cup star, will be Cummins’ teammate. The Sunrisers paid $1.22 million for the fiery left-hander.

The Delhi Capitals bought Harry Brook. An England batsman, for about £380,000 after he received the highest fee for an England player.

Due to a busy international schedule, Cummins missed this year’s IPL. However, he thrust himself back into the auction and became the target of fierce bidding.

IPL teams weren’t hesitant to spend big money to get Cummins, who helped Australia surprise India in the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad last month.

Although MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians lead the bidding, Cummins last participated in the IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders last season.

Glenn Maxwell and Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bangalore were also interested in Cummins. The Sunrisers offered a record-breaking offer.

Head’s achievement of making it back to the IPL. The first time in six years was eclipsed by Cummins’ cash check.

Head has played for two IPL teams in the past: the Royal Challengers in 2016 and 2017, and Delhi in 2015.

Star batter Steve Smith was not sold in the auction. But he has a long history in the IPL and will probably end up somewhere as Australia gets ready for the Americas and the Caribbean T20 World Cup in 2020.

Prior to the auction, the Australian teams had already decided to hold onto Mitch Marsh, David Warner, Matthew Wade, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Green, and Maxwell.
